Loose parts & re-loved materials

Loose parts and recycled materials inspire wonderfully imaginative constructions. At Gaias Nest sustainable practices underpin our everyday actions supporting our ethos as a holistic, organic and environmentally friendly centre. 

Our play spaces, such as home corner and mud kitchen, have been mostly sourced from second hand shops and the tip shop.  Authentic pre-loved items are treasured for realistic role play and are teaching children the implicit message that we value items for the entirety of their ‘useability’ .  We are constantly revisiting how we can refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle with the children and within our community.  

To reuse our items the invitation is always open for our families to bring in pre-loved open-ended items such as paper, card, bottle lids, old formula tins and scraps of wood etc ready for children’s imaginative creations.  This is an ongoing process with children continually thinking of ways they can reuse their waste items. We’ve seen rockets, robots, whales, paint tubs and pencil holders- amidst many other things- made throughout the rooms.
